I Do Windows

My Student Ariana C

Posted in Inspiration by Arcadia on June 13, 2011

Ariana C was a delightful student I had this semester in class!  When I found out she had a blog I knew I had to feature it.  You can check out this pretty girl (she’s a model) at: arianapamela.tumblr.com

Here are some photos I stole from her blog:

(just gorg!)

(what a cool idea)

(her favorite flowers)

(ooooh, I like this too!)

That’s what I love about reading others blogs, it’s like a sneak peek into someone’s diary – Thanks Ariana for sharing!

Polyvore – The virtual moodboard

Posted in Inspiration by Arcadia on June 5, 2011

The beginning of each semester I like to give my students a survey to fill out.  This gives me a chance to ascertain what they hope to get out of the class, as well as explain some of my goals.  I also try to make it an open discussion, so students can begin to share their experiences and ideas around visual merchandising.

As we were discussing ideas for inspiration, the website Polyvore came up.  One student raised their hand and asked what was it?  I in-turn then asked, who else had not heard of Polyvore?  I was kind of shocked to find out about half the class (I had 45 students) had NOT heard of this fun and useful site!

In a nutshell I would explain Polyvore as an online site where you can create your own moodboard virtually.  You cut and paste images you find from the web and create your “sets” as they call them.  You’re only limited by your own creativity.  Here are some sets I liked:

I suggest logging on and playing round, but be warned – it can be addicting!

Blog Love: Kelly Wearstler’s My Vibe My Life

Posted in Inspiration, Just Genius by Arcadia on June 5, 2011

I haven’t done a Blog Love post in a long while.  Here’s one I hope you will find time to visit and peruse:  Kelly Wearstler’s – My Vibe My Life.  It’s no secret to anyone who knows me how obsessed I am with Kelly’s work (she is an amazing interior designer).  I own all of her books which I reference often and I think she is a true maverick in the world of design.  My heart almost stopped when I found out she was coming out with her own Ready-to-wear clothing line!!

Truth be told I could never “live” in a Kelly designed room, it really  is TOO much going on (the complete opposite of what I’m always telling my students), but you just gotta appreciate her love of bold color, graphics, and statement pieces.  You are inspired everywhere you look!

Blog Love: Advanced Style

Posted in Fashion Styling, Inspiration by Arcadia on March 28, 2011

I can’t believe I’m just discovering this blog now – Advance Style.  What a great site and so uplifting!  It’s become a new favorite site for perusing.

My students (any many friends) are always asking for tips on how to dress: “Does this match?”“Do these shoes go with this dress?”, “What accessories should I wear?” I always reply, “Who cares, do YOU like it?  Then wear it!” At my all girl high school I was not voted best dressed, instead I got the distinction of most unique wardrobe!  I was and always have been about non-conformity and standing out  from the crowd.  The ladies on this blog are great examples of that.

True style is timeless and not a victim to fads and trends, evidenced by the fact so many of us are inspired by vintage looks or what we call retro – why else would so many of us be walking around with a Chanel bag our grandma handed down to us!

Before I die……

Posted in Discuss This Display, Inspiration by Arcadia on March 23, 2011

Today I’m getting inspiration from all sorts of places.  The photos below from public installation artist Candy Chang have got me thinking.  Which is precisely what we want displays to do – catch our eye and our minds!

Couldn’t you see yourself doing something similar for a wall display and maybe with a different question?  Nonetheless it’s a great idea to get passerby’ers engaged.

What would you write????

Dollar Store Toy Wreath

Posted in Inspiration, Props by Arcadia on March 23, 2011

I’m always on the hunt for inspiring ideas.  This dollar story toy wreath brought a huge smile to my face!  One might be inclined to think this would be great for a Christmas display, I on the other hand would use any time of the year.  It’s just so damn cheerful looking:

Visual Merchandising contest with students and ALU!

Posted in Discuss This Display, Inspiration, Nonpareil Windows by Arcadia on March 16, 2011

A selection of students from JAK Akademie for Fashion Design in Hamburg, are in a visual merchandising contest.  Students were asked to create 10 different window displays based on a theme they are given for that day.  They are working with merchandising fixtures provided by ALU.

ALU is an international company which manufactures retail fixtures like the Autopole, the Oyster, and the Ribbon (such creative names); plus a whole lot more!

What’s an Autopole? I remember back in 1992, when I was doing visuals for Macy’s, my boss came to me and said we are now going to be using these poles throughout the store for merchandise, as well as signage.  Autopoles are based on what photographers use.  An Autopole is an extremely lightweight vertical expansion system.  It only takes one person to assemble it!  It can offer you a 360° display range thanks to the “super clamps” or “Autopole Adapters” you can use.  I really loved how easy and accessible the Autopole made everything!

[Caution: I do not recommend the Autopole for pole dancing!]

The themes the students were given were:

  • Service
  • Denim Apparel
  • Cosmetics
  • Apparel
  • Electronics

Here are a few photos of the student’s window displays:

Give and Take

Shaped Stiff Jeans

Against Gravity

Cable Tangled, Cable Plants

How do you think they did?  You can click here to see the students actually working on their displays.

You can go online and vote for your favorite.  You have until March 31st:   http://www.facebook.com/ALUItaly

The winner will be awarded an internship with ALU.  I personally like Cable Tangled, Cable Plants.

Good luck to all!

Thank you Giulia C. for sending this in and for the images.

A tasty display to replicate if you don’t eat it all first!

I found this on Martha Stewart.com, you can also find this photo and the recipes in the March 2011 issue of Martha Stewart Living.

This is deliciously gorgeous!

When food is artfully arranged like this it really entices people to indulge.

An Education: Movie Inspiration for Group Project

Posted in Class Group Projects, Discuss This Display, Inspiration by Arcadia on March 2, 2011

The class has begun to settle into their groups and begin brainstorming on their group projects, as mentioned here.  The themes for the visual displays they will be creating are:

  • Movie
  • Music
  • “Green” (as in the environment)
  • Fashion Designer
  • Holiday

I’ve decided to play along with my class and come up with my own inspiration for a project.  Feel free to play along too, whether you are in my class or not and post your ideas in the comments section.

If I were to do a window or interior display based on a movie, I think the one I would choose right now would be “An Education” I found that movie to be incredibly chic!

I don’t know why, but I have a feeling most of my students might choose the favorites such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Marie Antoinette, The Devil Wears Prada, etc….they are good movies but too obvious.  Heck An Education isn’t an original idea, but I think it’s less obvious choice than those mentioned above.  I would really love to see my students go far out and choose something totally off the radar!

What movie would you choose for your display inspiration, and what product would you be highlighting?

Window Display – New Visual Merchandising

Posted in Book Reviews, Inspiration, Nonpareil Windows, Window Lessons by Arcadia on October 31, 2010

Well class, it looks like there will be a new “required reading” book.  Tony Morgan has published a fantastic new book all on Window Display!  But don’t fret yet – this book is a big picture book, it belongs on your coffee table with all the other fashion books.

The photos are beyond inspiring and cleverly broken up into genres:

  • Theatre
  • Seasonal
  • Quirky
  • Trends

Every trimmer should have this book on their work shelf for reference.  This book doesn’t go into deep detail on the “how-to”

, for that you should read Tony’s other book, which I use as the textbook for this class – Visual Merchandising – Window and In Store Display for Retail.

This book is a great reminder of why I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my work so much.  Thanks Tony!
